Old Standby
Cheers to Chicago for breaking from the cocktail pack. According to a new
Nielsen report on cocktail sales in major American cities, Chi-Town is the only
place where the best-selling drink isn’t a margarita. The drink of choice for
the Windy City: an old fashioned. This might have something to do with the fact
that a Chicago barman, Theodore Proulx, is credited with publishing the first
old fashioned recipe in 1888. To make the drink at home, muddle a sugar cube
with 3 dashes of angostura bitters in a rocks glass. Add 3 ounces bourbon
or rye whiskey and ice; stir briefly. Garnish with an orange peel.
