EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS AND GO A-WASSAILING
The Anglo-Saxon ritual of wassailing – toasting one’s good health with
a giant bowl of spiced, steaming drink – is historically practised on
Twelfth Night (5 January) or Old Twelfth Night (‘old twelvey’ on 17 January,
for traditionalists who prefer to use the pre-Gregorian calendar date). It’s
the basis for modern carolling: the well-wishing wassailers go door-to-door
singing while, in rural areas, revellers gather in orchards to bless the trees
for the year to come and drive out pesky evil spirits.
The practice is still popular in cider-producing regions, and Somerset’s
Avalon Orchard, in the shadow of Glastonbury Tor (below), will host a family
wassail day on Saturday 18 January featuring storytellers and plenty of local
cider – see nationaltrust.org.uk/glastonbury-tor. Find an event near you, or
host one in your own back garden – mulled cider essential.
