Lose yourself in cinema
This month, take your pick of
new releases with a historical
flavour (quality popcorn
essential). Greta Gerwig’s
version of the much-filmed novel
Little Women (out now), set after
the American Civil War, stars
Saoirse Ronan (below, with
Timothée Chalamet) and Meryl
Streep. Meanwhile 1917 (out
10 Jan), directed by Sam Mendes,
tells the story of two young
British soldiers tasked with
delivering a vital message during
World War One. For something
lighter, try The Personal History
of David Copperfield (out 24 Jan),
a new Dickens adaptation with a
stellar cast. Rather stay in and
stream something with a good
meal? See p88 for inspiration.

ENTERA COMPETITION...
...that could change your life. The Scottish Baking Awards
reward excellence in artisan baking and patisserie, and are
open to amateurs and professionals across the UK (entry £35,
£15 for students and under-16s; closes 20 June).
The eight categories include bread, sugarcraft, chocolate and
home baking, plus an open-category class for under-16s. Gold,
Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded at a live judging day
at Mar Hall Hotel near Glasgow on 5 September – a great day
out for spectators (tickets £15; scottishbakingawards.co.uk).
Not camera-shy? Entry will open in autumn for season 12
of The Great British Bake Off (gbbo.take-part.co.uk) and early
this year for the new series of MasterChef 2021 (masterchef.
com), when the new series airs. Mark your diary.
