FOOD WASTE: GOOD NEWS – AND BAD
Did you know that 4.4 million potatoes are thrown awayin
the UK every day? But there is a positive story – we binned
480,000 tonnes less food in 2018 than in 2015, accordingthe
Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). What
made the difference? It’s thought it was due to clearer
labelling, heightened public awareness and more local
authorities offering food waste collections.
It’s a move in the right direction, but UK homes still waste
6.6 million tonnes of food a year. Shockingly, WRAP
estimates 4.5 million tonnes of that could have beeneate
If you include food wasted in the supply chain, WRAPs
the total UK food waste figure is a staggering 9.5 million
tonnes per year. That waste produces around 25 million
tonnes of CO 2 – equivalent to the emissions produced by
10 million cars. How much land is required to produce
that wasted food? An area almost the size of Wales...
