Hodgson Burnett’s troubling story in the latest
big-screen version, with star turns from Julie Walters
and Colin Firth. Dixie Egerickx (great name) plays
spoiled orphan Mary Lennox. She’s taken in by her
grieving uncle (Firth), whose wife (Mary’s aunt) diedin
childbirth, to begin a lonely life on the Yorkshire Moors.
Mary’s only friends are a robin and a scruffy dog,but
she soon finds she’s not the only child in the house
- and discovers a fantastical sunlit garden as life starts
to change for the better. Not as complex as the book,
this is nevertheless an enchanting spectacle.
