  • Remember that reds (as well as delicate
whites and rosés) lose their freshness two to
three days after opening, so consider buying
half bottles or even single-glass bottles so
you open a new bottle more often. Drinking
like this might help you limit your intake too.

  • Choose versatile wines to match a wide
range of home cooking – I nominate white
burgundy (especially a mâcon) and Chile’s
smooth pinot noir for effortless food pairing.

    • Pep up inexpensive fizz with syrups from
your storecupboard such as maple syrup or
the syrup from a tin of tropical fruit: 1-2 tsp
topped up with fizz equals instant cocktail.

    • Support any local wine merchants doing
deliveries – and don’t forget local wineries
too, especially during English and Welsh
Wine Week (June 20-28), when there’ll
be special offers and online tastings. See
      winegb.co.uk for details.
