If you were dismayed by the vast
quantities of litter left on beaches
and at beauty spots this summer,
here’s a fun antidote: Plastic Patrol
organises coordinated litter picks
combined with free activities such
as yoga and paddleboarding.
On the accompanying app you log
the type of litter, which is added
to a global litter map found on the
Plastic Patrol website, used to lobby
businesses and governments to
take more responsibility for
environmental pollution. Since 2016,
the ‘crowdsource cleaningtheplanet’
initiative has gathered 271000
pieces of litter from 80cou

ON ORKNEY – FROM AFAR
Over the past few months all kinds
of events have happened virtually

    on the act. From 29 August to
    13 September, Foraging Fortnight
    willinclude virtual outdoorsy fun as
    partof the Orkney International
    Science Festival, bringing
    the beauty of the islands
    to your fingertips. Events
    include streamed
    foraging walks with ethnobotanist Anna Canning,
    cooking demo with food writer Wendy Barrie,
    plus paper-making using wild ingredients with
    artist Lin Chau. Most events are free; some include
    the cost of activity kits, which will be posted in advance.
