MEET THE CRAFTER

HOW IT ALL BEGAN I took a degree in fashion and
textiles as a mature student and although
I didn’t use it directly, I did start designing
my own knitting patterns to make tea cosies.
The first I made just for myself – a Fair Isle pattern with
hearts on. Now I do the designs, a colleague knits up the
first cosy and a small group of women make the rest.
With the best will in the world, the cosies all turn out a bit
different because everyone has their own knitting style.
We make tea cosies, water bottle covers and all sorts of
knitted things for the home.
MY INSPIRATION I’ve always loved tea cosies. I like the whole
business of tea-making: loose tea in a teapot, boiling water
and a tea cosy to keep it warm – it’s a decorative end to a
happy process. I worked for years not being creative and
now it’s a joy. Seeing something through from the original
thought to getting it out there is so satisfying: “I had this
idea and somebody likes it!” My original cosy is still around,
15 years on – it’s well used, with lots of tea stains, and sits
on a teapot in our workroom. Tea cosy, £26, chichimoi.co.uk

JAN OLLIS started her
small-scale tea cosy
and knitting business,
Chi-Chi Moi, in Somerset
around 15 years ago. A
cuppa is generally on the go.

CHECKOUTTHEBEEF
Last month I promised to write about a new
nationwide quality meat delivery service. Sadly,
the business is no more due to a loss of funding,
so instead I’m highlighting Piper’s Farm, famous
for quality free-range and grass-fed meat, which
is offering a 20% discount for delicious. readers,
with free P&P, until 17 November 2019*. The
seasonal meat boxes are particularly good value
and worth checking out. Visit pipersfarm.com and
enter the code DELICIOUS19 at the checkout.

Working hands
Colder weather can
make skin feel rough
and uncared-for,
especially after a lot
of food prep. Use Tam
Mason’s sugar hand
scrub, handmade in
Somerset, instead of
soap and let the gritty
texture work its magic
(it helps get rid of food
odours, too). Wonderful
stuff. Mint & cedarwood
nourishing hand scrub,
£15, tammason.co.uk
