orme, food is about family.
It is about love and it is
about joy. It’s something
t brings us together and it is
routine that frames our lives.

foodcan also be a cause of

I wasdrawn to Action Against
Hunger because they specialise in
nutrition and food, and in June
I was fortunate to visit Bangladesh
to see first-hand the incredible work
the organisation is undertaking to
support Rohingya refugees who’ve
escaped persecution in Myanmar.
They receive hot meals, mental
health support and medical services.

a sleepy fishing port that has been
transformed into the world’s
largest refugee camp, I met
refugees who are now working
as Action Against Hunger chefs.
They face the daunting challenge
of feeding more than 300 energetic
children twice a day. At Sabor
I have 80 covers and a large team
of talented chefs to support me.
Here was a small team who were
serving huge crowds with little
more than a few vegetables,
a handful of spices and some rice.
Despite the size of the challenge,
the food was incredible. The
combination of spices delivered a
dish that exploded on the palate, and
it’s a recipe I hope to emulate at my
own restaurant. That the chefs were
able to deliver this on an industrial
scale, with so few ingredients, fills
me with awe and respect.
I knew my trip to Bangladesh
would be shocking, and the scale
of need is huge, but what I wasn’t

prepared for was the beauty and
inspiration I found there.
What touched me the most was
how much love and joy there was
in that kitchen. From the chefs’
passion for cooking to the beaming
smiles of the children who laughed
and played as they shared their
meals. It showed me that, even
in the most challenging situations,
food has the power to inspire us,
unite us and lift our spirits.

SMALL CHANGE, BIG RESULTS
That’s the principle behind Action Against
Hunger’s Love Food Give Food campaign, which
runs until the end of October. UK restaurants
including Sabor, Hawskmoor, Caravan, Dinner
by Heston Blumenthal and The River Cafe will
be adding an optional £1 to the bill or donating
part of the proceeds from a specific dish
towards the charity’s work. Learn more at
