Ourtastebudstriggersignificantmemoriesforsomanyofus.Whenmymum

diedbackinmymidteens,I wasleftnavigatingtheweeklyshopandcookingfor

mybrotheranddad.ThereweretwopacketmixesI boughtregularly:Green’s

cheesecakeandlittleboxedsachetsoflemonmeringuepiefilling.

Mumgavemesolidtraininginthekitchenandwasa finecookherself(pangof

sadnessthatshenevergottoknowwhatI dofora living),butmyyoungerbrother

andI yearnedfortreatswe’donlyrarelybeenallowedwhenMumwasalive.

Sometimesweatethatfake-lemonypiefillingfromthepanaswesatonthesofa

watchingTheGenerationGame.Onp14,DeboraRobertsonmusesonreports

thatsalesofold-schoolmixeshavebeensoaring.Coulditbetodowiththecomfort

I soughtbackinthe1970s?Maybe.Butthere’ssurelymoretoitthanthat,

andI seizeonanysignthat,asDeboraseesit,foodelitismmightbeonthewane.

I’mnotsuggestingweallstarttearingopenpacketsbecause,withtheright

recipes,youcanachievesimplicity,contentmentandwarmthalmostaseasily
