MAGGOT
BANGERS?
This might be hard to
swallow, but how do you
feel about sausages made
from the larvae of waste-
eating flies? According to
University of Queensland
scientists, black solider fly
larvae could be a nutrient-
rich, environmentally
friendly meat
alternative.
Researchers
admit maggots
don’t sound very
attractive, but with
a change of mindset and
creative cooking, they
could be turned into tasty
food. Whole larvae could
be made into sausages
or dried and turned into
flour, and their fat can
be used like butter.
With meat and dairy
taking a heavy toll on the
environment, isn’t it time
we stopped being so
squeamish about eating
insects? After all, they’re
already a dietary
staple for 2.5
billion people on
the planet.

That gut

PSYCHOBIOTICS are
the microorganisms in
our gut believed to
communicate with the
brain via the vagus
nerve. Scientists think
they affect our emotions
and hope the link might
lead to treatments for
conditions such as
depression. But the
microbes are still
poorly understood, and
it’s not known which of
the trillions in our gut
communicate along the
gut-brain axis. Also,
most theories are based
on studies in mice. Be
wary of buying probiotic
supplements that claim
to enhance your mood.

ZERO CAL, ZERO

RISK... or not?
Artificially sweetened drinks may not be
the heart healthy option they’re claimed to
be, according to a Journal of the American
College of Cardiology report. Researchers
at Sorbonne Paris Nord University
explored links between heart disease,
consumption of sugary drinks (containing
more than 5% sugar) and consumption of
artificially sweetened (non-nutritive or
zero-calorie) drinks. They found that
consumers of both types of drink had a
raised risk of cardiovascular disease.
