world-class wine trails. It’s been more
than 40 years since Long Island’s first
commercial vineyard was established,
and the local tasting guide points to over
40 destination wineries. On the North
Fork, head to sustainable farm Shinn
Estate Vineyards for its new-release
summer rosè and big Bordeaux-style reds
like petit verdot and merlot. Nearby winery
Sparkling Pointe showcases bright,
mineraly sparkling wine produced
méthode traditionnelle. And a glass of
chardonnay from biodynamic vineyard
Bedell will have you tasting history
- it was served at former president
Barack Obama’s inauguration.
Heading south, a quick ferry ride
to the picturesque Shelter Island is
worth a day trip. You can spend the
day kayaking at Wade Beach, or have
a soda and lunch at the counter in
old-fashioned Soda Fountain
Pharmacy and Cafe. Jump on the ferry
again to cross to the South Fork, where it’s
high time for coffee and a doughnut in Sag
Harbour. Three-day fermented brioche
dough is on the rise at local doughnut shop
Grindstone. Toasted marshmallow
‘s’mores’ doughnuts drenched in a Nutella
glaze are buttery and sticky sweet, and if
you’re visiting in autumn, join the queue for
cider doughnuts, made with a local apple
cider. But beware, they sell out quick!
Fashion meets food at Donna Karan’s
daughter Gabby’s southern Italian
restaurant, Tuttu il Giorno in Sag Harbour,
where she also stocks her mother’s clothing
line, homewares and accessories at
attached boutique Urban Zen.
