wooden Trojan horse. Amid the paddocks
brimming with olive trees that surround
Troy, its newly opened ultra-modern
museum, Troya Müzesi, is a bold
architectural contrast against the
landscape. More than 80 million Turkish
Lira (approx. $AUD 20 million) were spent
on the remarkable museum, which opened
in 2018 and now affords visitors an
incomparable glimpse into the civilisation’s
4000-year-old past.
VOLOS
For many, a Greek getaway summons
daydreams of the country’s postcard-
perfect islands. And yet, nearly 70 per cent
of Greece is covered in mountains – in fact,
it’s one of Europe’s most mountainous
nations. From the port of Volos, we set off
for the monk-built monasteries of Meteora.
Perched what seems all-too precariously
atop towering rock formations – some
higher than 400 metres – sit the ‘hanging’
monasteries, where six of the original
30 hermit-occupied monasteries endure.
An improvised pulley system once formed
the only access to these monasteries, built
