The FDA is now enforcing a
rule that requires major food
companies to list added sugars
on nutrition labels. So some
companies are swapping
processed sugar for natural
sweeteners like honey, maple
syrup and...dates. Brands
including Wanna Date?, Date
Lady and Just Date are selling
date-based spreads, syrups and
sauces. Meanwhile, the super-
sweet fruit has become a staple
in better-for-you brownie, cookie
and truffle recipes. Medjool dates
are definitely more nutritious
than refined sweeteners, but
take note: A serving of two still
has 32 grams of sugar!

Sales of packaged coffee drinks like canned lattes and bottled cold brew
increased 16 percent over the last year, and the caffeine craze has
inspired some unexpected mashups.

Big Cheese
Thanks to the keto diet—and America’s obsession with low-carb
snacks—we’re now eating cheese like potato chips. The snack
aisles are full of cheese in the form of puffs (Cheesepop) and crisps
(ParmCrisps). And one cheesy snack has made a big comeback:
Just the Cheese baked cheese bars exploded in popularity
during the Atkins craze of the early 2000s but disappeared when
the diet fell out of fashion. The company relaunched with
keto-friendly packaging in 2017, and now its bites and bars are
