tellsmeontheridehome.Thosewhosepartnersfail
toreturntotheirhabitualbreedinggroundhaveto
consolethemselvesat theendofthematingseason

TheicecrunchesbeneaththeZodiacsaswenose
gentlythroughtheslurry.A humpbackthreetimes
ourboatsizesurfacescloseby,scaringuswitless.We


spya femaleleopardsealrollingluxuriantlyona floe,
holdingherflipperslikea fan.A bigleopardvaults
his300-kilogramheftupandontoa floeinfrontof
us,andthenwespyanotheryoungmalewitha fresh
tailwound.Heyawns,exposinga half-headofteeth
andscratcheshisbellyontheice.Hestaresat us.And
thenheopenshismouth,closeshiseyesandstartsto
singina high-pitchedwarble.Ourastonishedguide
