FRESH VOICES
Independent publisher Somekind
has joined forces with writer Lee
Tran Lam and her Australian
writers’ collective, Diversity in Food
Media Australia (DIFMA), to publish
a mixed media anthology of fresh,
food-focused voices and visions.
“The goal of DIFMA is to promote
diverse voices, and this book is
a really cool, tangible way we can
do that,” says Lam.
The project saw an open call for
submissions from new writers,
illustrators, photographers and
storytellers. More than 100
submissions flooded in: an Iranian
refugee detailing his
Mesopotamian heritage;
illustrations of cheeseburger spring
rolls; unique story ideas from
a blind writer; and an African
American detailing his experience
of cooking vegan soul food.
“He talks about the history, the
hardship and resilience. He also
talks about coming to Australia,
and seeing it done by other people
without context,” says Lam. This is
still a work in progress. The final
book is set to be printed in late
October, with pre-orders still
available. “Publishing with
Somekind has been amazing.
It’s pretty cool – you don't have to
be Jamie Oliver to publish a book
with them.” somekindpress.com
