“Comme des Garçons has been a part of Melbourne’s
fashion landscape since the early 1980s, when it was
sold here and embraced by women looking for more
inspiring and empowering fashion options,” says
Danielle Whitfield, fashion curator at Melbourne’s
National Gallery of Victoria. The Japanese label is
the focus of the Collecting Comme exhibition, which
demonstrates how designer Rei Kawakubo has subverted
garment shapes and fashion concepts for decades.
“Season after season, she presents us with something
new and unexpected,” says Whitfield.
