Short-haul but sweet
Short, local getaways are the new way to holiday,
and Australian luggage start-up July has released
a new range to reflect our adapted travel plans.
The Carry All range is a three-piece collection
consisting of a backpack, a weekend bag and
a tote. Each comes with unique features,
including magnetic-closing pockets and laptop
compartment, plus a five-year warranty. july.com

Piesolation tactics
When Devoney Scarfe went into isolation
in New Zealand, she couldn’t have predicted
pies would punctuate each day. But baking
a less-than-great pie a week before going into
lockdown set her on a quest for improvement.
“I made it my mission to blind bake the perfect
crust and it spiralled from there,” she says.
Sweet and savoury pies with detailed crusts
resembling memes and pop-culture icons (like
the Piellennium Falcon, pictured) emerged from
the oven. After studying fine arts and working
in film and television, making pies offered a
creative outlet for Scarfe while also feeding
her family. “I wanted to regain that creative
freedom I felt [when I was] at art school,” she
says. Find her on Instagram @devoney.scarfe

Saluting the admiral
Bega Valley micro-gin distillery North of Eden has been through it all this
year, from bushfires to the recent travel bans that wreaked havoc on their
business and prevented them from opening their gin school. But they’re
pushing on and ready to release a brand new gin, as well as reopening their
cellar door. Partners Gavin Hughes and Karen Touchie (and Flora, their
resident highland cow and “general manager”) will unleash The Admiral this
month – a powerful 114% proof navy strength-style gin that, according to
Hughes, is the couple’s best gin yet. The cellar door is set to reopen in July
as well, so you can pop in and try a nip for yourself. northofeden.com.au
