Halo Top became America’s best-selling grocery

store pint in 2017, and other companies have raced

to produce their own low-calorie ice creams.

Most are made with nonfat milk and often with

low or zero-calorie sweeteners like stevia.

Critics have raised concerns about the keto diet’s

health effects, but companies are still slapping

keto-friendly labels onto all kinds of treats. These

ice creams are high in fat and low in carbs and sugar,

factors that supposedly help with weight loss.

Oat milk is a hit with dairy-averse coffee drinkers

because of its neutral taste and richness, and it’s

winning over ice cream lovers, too. Another big plus:

Many oat milk products are free from

common allergens, like nuts, soy and gluten.

Dairy-free ice cream has come a long way since

Tofutti hit the market in the 1980s, thanks to

innovations in nut milk production. Almond milk

is naturally watery, so most companies add oil;

cashew milk–based pints are naturally creamier.

Coconut milk contains more fat than other plant

milks, so it’s responsible for some of the creamiest

dairy-free ice creams. Cult-favorite brand Jeni’s uses

coconut cream, which is even richer. Fair warning to

coconut haters: The flavor is difficult to mask.

Knowing that most people indulge at night, the

founders of Nightfood worked with sleep experts

to develop ice cream with less fat and sugar,

plus mix-ins that are naturally high in melatonin.

Other companies add prebiotic fiber and collagen.
