One of the islands’ most
well-known wineries, Los
Bermejos is a must-visit.

Drive through Timanfaya
National Park to El Golfo
on the west coast for
seafood and a glass of
wine beside the ocean. It
won’t be the most gour-
met experience of your
trip, but the black rocks
en route and the ocean
when you get there are
worth it.

TENERIFE

Make sure to call wineries
here before visiting. They
also don’t sell wine on-
site. Visit the wine shop
Vinófilos in Santa Cruz

TO TRY NOW

Even if you can’t get to
the Canary Islands, the
wines can be found in
ambitious U.S. wine
shops and are worth
seeking out. —RAY ISLE

2018 VIÑÁTIGO LISTÁN
NEGRO JOVEN ($19)
There’s no new oak
influence on this bright,
cherry-scented, peppery
red from Tenerife. It’s
a great introduction to
Canary Islands wine.

2018 TAJINASTE TINTO
TRADICIONAL ($22)
Named for a flower that
grows on Tenerife, Taji-
naste is run by Agustín
García Farrais, one of the
island’s most talented
winemakers. This wine is
100% Listán Negro, full of
plum and earth notes.

2019 LOS BERMEJOS
MALVASÍA VOLCÁNICA
SECO ($25)
Malvasía Volcánica, a
grape that’s truly indig-
enous to the Canary
Islands, makes intensely
stony, citrusy whites, as
this bottling makes clear.

2018 ENVÍNATE BENJE
BLANCO ($28)
A quartet of wildly
talented winemakers
founded Envínate, for
which they make superb
wines like this evocatively
smoky, old-vine Listán
Blanco—a white that
speaks of the Canaries’
volcanic past.

many seaside bars in El Golfo, a fishing village on Lanzarote.
