T
HE SWEET smells of baking with
natural, high-quality ingredients—
such as Kerrygold butter—capture the magic
of the holidays and the simple pleasures
of spending time with family and friends.
Growing up in Ireland, where abundant
rainfall and a mild climate provide the perfect
environment for producing grass-fed cheese
and butter, Mary Hurley remembers a time
when her mother could make a feast out of
seemingly nothing—and whip up delightfully
tempting cakes for dessert after Sunday dinner.
When Mary was young, if you asked for
a recipe, you cherished it. Just as farming
knowledge was carefully passed down among
small family-run farms, recipes came from
someone you knew and often included a story.
Mary’s mom would handwrite recipes for
friends on any piece of paper she could fi nd—
even a card cut from the back of a cereal box.

Th ese handwritten recipes have become
tangible memories for Mary, their smells
taking her back to being a little girl, watching
her mom in the kitchen. Now that she is a
grandma herself, after years of running a dairy
farm with her husband, she has decided to
continue the tradition for her daughters and
grandchildren. She is writing down recipes,
such as her legendary coff ee cake, so that one
day her granddaughter will not only enjoy
a deliciously buttery cake made from real
ingredients—but the memory of baking it
with her grandma.
