Apple Design Awards ceremony, with Apple
foreshadowing the success of its expanded
sector. When the company launches Apple
Arcade, it may even decide to separate the
Apple Design Awards and original gaming titles
into two distinct categories to avoid favoritism.

The first of this year’s winners was Ordia, a
one-finger action game where players start as
a new life form, taking leaps into “a strange
and hazardous world”. Users are able to
jump, bounce, stick and slide their way through
stunning environments, made all the prettier
on the latest iPhone XS and XS Max displays.
“Deadly hazards crowd the walls. Enemies
spin and charge and chase you, forcing you to
quickly react and adapt. Collectibles and secret
areas tempt you to explore. Every curve and
corner of Ordia’s levels feels carefully crafted to
balance tension, surprise, and joy,” said Apple
in its write-up of the app, adding “even the
smallest successes feel hugely rewarding.” The
game is smooth, feedback is satisfying, and
environments are beautiful and otherworldly,
though its mechanics can be frustrating as you
begin to progress.
