Savage State

As the American Civil War erupts, a French-
born family that had settled in Missouri
abandons it in a bid to return to Paris. The
group is escorted through the perilous
Western territories by a mercenary called
Victor (Kevin Janssens), whose dark past soon
comes flooding back.

FIVE FACTS:

  1. Napoleon III, the Emperor of the French
from 1852 to 1870, is referenced early in
    the film.

  2. The reference comes when the film notes
that, in 1861, Napoleon III warned “French
settlers on the continent” to adhere to “strict
neutrality” during the American Civil War.

  3. Edmond, the male head of the family of
French colonists in the film, is played by
    Bruno Todeschini.

  4. Meanwhile, Constance Dollé plays his
wife Madeline – and their daughters are
portrayed by Alice Isaaz, Déborah François
    and Maryne Bertieaux.

  5. In the film, the youngest daughter, Esther
(Isaac), is romantically drawn towards Victor,
who is also similarly sought after by Bettie
(Katie Moran), a bandit queen chasing
    the travelers.
