Basic Orton effect
This is a quick and easy method
of applying the Orton effect; it’s
not as effective as the full version
of the technique, which uses several layers
but this basic approach remains popular for
many photographers. Press Ctrl/Cmd+J to
make a copy of the Background Layer, then
go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set
Radius to between 20-30 pixels before
clicking OK. All you need to do now is
reduce the Opacity of the layer to
somewhere in the region of 10-30%.

Tilt-and-shift
miniature effect
Press Ctrl+J to make a copy of
the Background Layer to work
on, then go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-
Shift. Set Blur to 60 and use the guide to set
the sharp area using the inner lines, and the
blur graduation by moving the dashed outer
lines. The whole guide can be moved by
dragging the circle in the centre. Once
you’re happy with the result, click OK at
the top of the dialog box. The miniature
effect will now be applied to the image.

Lensbaby effect
Copy the Background Layer by
pressing Ctrl/Cmd+J. With the
Elliptical Marquee Tool, drag an
ellipsis over the area of the shot that needs
to be kept sharp. Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+I
to invert the selection, then go to Select >
Modify > Feather and set Feather Radius
to 500. Press Ctrl/Cmd+D to turn off the
selection. Now go to Filter > Blur > Radial
Blur and set Amount to 30, Blur Method to
Zoom and Quality to Draft. Add a Black
& White Adjustment Layer if you like.
