  • it’s that time of year! Some of them
    are postcard-perfect, so we’ve curated
    a special selection. Seeing winter
captured in such a variety of ways
    by multiple readers proves that
photography is about more than just
equipment – it’s the way you use it.

‘Silver Birch in
Hoar Frost’ by Steve Rex
“I thought you would like this picture that
I took from my house in Shropshire in early
January, during a heavy hoar frost that
lasted all day. This silver birch tree was
crying out to have its picture taken –
I thought it looked stunning against
the blue sky, with the sun lighting it
up and the mist in the back ground.
“I took this shot with a Fujifilm X-T2
and an XF18-55mm lens. The raw file
only needed minimum adjustments,
which were made in Affinity Photo.”

Digital Camera says: A beautiful shot,
Steve. It has the feel of something you’d
spot in the Deep South of America. You
can always rely on Fujifilm’s colours
and ability to help you get things right
in-camera. When you use negative space,
be careful not to crop your main subject
too close to the edge of the frame: give
yourself a bit of shooting room, as
you can always crop later.

‘Pyrford’ by Goran
Mashanovih
“These are the ruins of Newark
Priory, near Woking in Surrey, which
was founded at the end of the 12th
century and dissolved by Henry VIII.
Arriving before sunrise, I had to take
photos handheld from the side of
the road, as the ruins are private
property. Fog blocked the trees
behind the ruins and made the
front tree more prominent.”

Digital Camera says: It’s a
shame that you’re unable to fully
access the ruins, but they look great
situated amongst the mist. You’re
right about the tree competing as
the most prominent feature within
the frame. We wonder if a slight crop
on the right-hand side might help to
pull the image together.
