‘A Snowy Day in North
Yorkshire’ by Merry Foster
“Where I live, we aren’t short of good
views and livestock. More mesmerised
by the falling snow, I walked past this
scene at first but turned back and
managed to take this shot while the
snow was coming down less heavily.
I used one of my own presets which
is designed for snow, and added a
very slight blue hue to give the
shot more of a wintry feel.
“The only thing I would change if
I were to shoot it again would be to
take my tripod and play around with
the shutter speed, as a slower shutter
speed would have given the falling
snow a different look. I shoot a lot of
wildlife, but for some reason decided
not to take my tripod with me that day.”
Digital Camera says: It’s easy to
see why Yorkshire earned its name
‘God’s own country’ when you see
shots like this. There’s an even
exposure throughout, with the
trunks and bark giving some natural
contrast to the lighter snow.
The sheep may detract from the
image for some, but we feel they add
another interesting layer to the scene,
and provide a pleasing horizontal
line through the lower third.
3 ‘Southampton Common’
by Phil Banyard
“This image marked the start of
a year-long project, taking the
same shot each month to record
the changes through the seasons.
I was inspired on 1 January by the
hard frost, which adds to the drama.
I used my Pentax K-1 Mk II with a
24-70mm lens, mounted on a tripod
and firing using a remote trigger
“In editing, I added a graduated
filter to bring in the sky detail, plus
tweaks to exposure, highlights
and shadows as well as clarity
and vibrance. I spent quite a while
adjusting the composition at the
location, as I will be going back
time after time.”
Digital Camera says: This is a
calming and tranquil image, Phil.
A dramatic sky, nicely exposed,
brings the scene to life. A small crop
top and bottom may lead to a wider
image, adding a little more drama.
