‘Fleeting Winter Sun’
by Mark Cox
“This is one of my first photographs
taken on a proper camera after years
of using a camera phone. Having
headed out specifically for ‘the
golden hour’, it was pure luck I got
anything due to the cloud conditions.
The group of sledgers was intended
as the focal point, and I tried framing
them using the posts of the fence
cutting across the shot.”
Digital Camera says: A very
calming scene, Mark. You could crop
this image right down the centre
and also have two excellent square
images that feel entirely different.
The left-hand side is quite bright with
a lot going on, while the right-hand
side offers a single tree in solitude,
with the fence providing a leading
line into the image.

‘Crane Attack’ by Mark Corns
“A friend and I took a misty-
morning walk through Bradgate Park
in Leicestershire, trying to photograph
some deer. We got some good shots, then
spotted this crane in a tree and watched
as the egret made an appearance and
attempted to take the top spot on the
tree. Mr Crane was having none of it,
though! With his dive-bombing
mission a failure, the egret flew on.”
Digital Camera says: What a great
spot – it’s always rewarding when you
come home with something unplanned.
The similar tones right across the image
allow the action to stand out in an almost
yin-yang style concept of dualism.

‘Sunset 2020’ by Craig Montague
“I was out walking round Dean Clough
Reservoir in Lancashire, trying to photograph the
perfect winter sunset. It took a lot of crawling around
in the snow to catch the perfect angle – I wanted
to really capture the natural winter landscape.
I played around with filters, then did some editing
in Lightroom. I was happy with this shot, and really
worked at it. It was worth getting a few funny looks
from passers-by, probably thinking I was crazy
for lying in the freezing snow!”
Digital Camera says: A great exposure, exposing
for the brighter sky in the background. The subtle
use of a dark vignette draws the eye to the main
subject in the centre; using a white or lighter
vignette wouldn’t have been quite as effective.
Finding a new angle – literally in this case – is
something many people don’t try. Being prepared
to get down in the dirt for a powerful shot is what
we like to see. Well done, Craig.
