‘Berries’ by Philip Weir
“This image was taken near
my home, between Glasgow and
Edinburgh. I’m lucky living in the
country and being able to shoot a
lot of wintry scenes, as we only get
this kind of weather for around 7-14
days once a year. We had snow and
-6°C temperatures for at least 10
days, during which time I was out
trying to make the best of the
weather – it’s amazing how a
scene changes so much with frost
hanging and snow on the ground.”
Digital Camera says: It really is
like a new world when more extreme
weather hits – opportunities for
magical shots pop up everywhere.
Philip makes great use of shallow
focus to isolate the berries in the
foreground, and captures a pleasing
red and blue colour palette.

‘Boats and Bridges’ by Lloyd Hunt
“I’m still getting to know my new Fujifilm X-T30, and spent
the weekend trying to photograph mist and fog for the first time.
Shooting from a tripod, I focused on the boats in the foreground and
wasn’t concerned that the bridges were not in focus, as they were
disappearing into the fog. I boosted the shadows in Lightroom and
added some warmth to the highlights to match the day’s mood.”
Digital Camera says: There’s a great feel to this image, Lloyd, and
it’s a good start to using your X-T30. A slight tilt down would have
given the boat up front and centre a little more breathing room
while still keeping the bridge fully in frame, too – but it’s a
beautifully captured and atmospheric photograph.

‘The First Snowfall’ by Julie Tennant Gregory
“This tree is at the bottom of my garden. It looked stunning after the snowfall we’d just had –
I couldn’t resist taking a picture! It was taken with a Canon EOS R I’d recently treated myself to, and
a 50mm lens. I didn’t edit the image at all, and was very pleased with the results. I took various shots
of the plants in the garden that were covered in snow and ice, but this tree shot came out tops.”
Digital Camera says: A 50mm lens sometimes is all you need, and this shot proves it. High-key
images are perfect for the winter seasons, with overcast skies allowing for punchy exposures to
elevate the finer details of the subject. We like the subtle use of negative space in the top and right.
