Attach your camera to a tripod and compose using the
rear screen and the Virtual Horizon to make sure the
camera is level, before manually focusing at one third of the
distance into the scene. Always make sure image stabilisation
is turned off when the camera is tripod-mounted.

Set the camera to Aperture Priority mode at ISO 100 with
the aperture set to f/11 or f/16; switching between them
may be necessary to keep the exposure between 15 and 30
seconds. Apply any exposure compensation if necessary,
and release the shutter using a remote.

A shutter remote is essential for
shooting light trails: releasing
the shutter by pressing the
shutter button will likely
cause camera shake, and
using the self-timer results
in a delay which could mean
you miss capturing a busy
period of traffic.

Inject a strong sense of movement by using light
to pull the eye into a scene – to great effect

f you’re looking
for a classic
low-light subject
with an instant
wow factor, look
no further than capturing light
trails. Find a safe position above
or alongside a road, and aim to
shoot at dusk, when the sky is
still blue rather than pure black.
This gives you a shooting

window of around 20 minutes,
so make sure you’re on location
at sunset. You need to be ready
to shoot as soon as it becomes
dark enough, but a glow
remains in the sky.
The main image here,
however, was purposefully shot
after dark to capture a black
sky that contrasts against the
red lights on the cranes.

PRO SHOT
Battersea Power Station
This internationally known
London landmark needs little
introduction to photographers.
This classic shot of passing trains
in the foreground fills empty dark
space with vibrant colour; it simply
relies on a 15-30 second exposure,
alongside careful timing to ensure
that enough trains are passing
by during the exposure.
