Carefully watch the scene and release the shutter when
vehicles are moving through the scene in both directions,
to ensure total coverage of light trails. Shooting when there
aren’t enough vehicles results in an image that simply doesn’t
work, since the frame has been composed to capture trails.

Light trails are most commonly shot in urban environments
and from motorway flyovers, but the technique can be used
with great results in more rural settings. For shots like this
to work in a landscape rather than a cityscape environment,
find an elevated position above a busy road and shoot at
rush hour, when the road will be its busiest.
