CLASSICAL MUSIC

  1. (^) Hear SoundBox:
    Nostalgia
    A series for “adventurous listeners.”
    sfsymphonyplus.org,
    February 4.
Esa-Pekka Salonen, who, in his debut seasonas
music director of the San Francisco Symphony, has
found himself a conductor without an audience,is
using the time to tinker with the concert formatat
a time when there’s no downside. The orchestrais
launching a digital SoundBox series of streaming
    concerts organized around a mood, a concept,ora
literary conceit. The first features new musicwith
a veneer of antiquity, as if the composers,Freya
    Waley-Cohen, Missy Mazzoli, and CarolineShaw,
were trying to reconstruct a music history—ora
    sonic world—they couldn’t quite remember. j.d.
    BOOKS

  2. (^) Read Sanctuary
    From a Trinity grad.
    Random House.
In 2013, Emily Rapp Black wrote a best-selling
memoir, The Still Point of the Turning World,
about her infant son, Ronan, who’d beendiag-
nosed with a terminal disease. In her devastating
new memoir—written after Ronan’s death andthe
implosion of Black’s marriage—she picks upwhere
she left off with a tale of world-altering griefand
what comes after it (in Black’s case, a periodof
near-suicidal heartbreak and, later, new marriage
and a daughter). But make no mistake: Thisis not
a tidy story about healing after loss but amore
honest and unruly one—about how to liveinthe
    world while wounded. c.c.
    NOT YOUR AVERAGE ROM-COM
    Under-the-radar films to watch on
    Valentine’sDay.
    Crossing Delancey, VOD
A delightful, oddball 1988 romance, directed
by the late great Joan Micklin Silver, starring
    Amy Irving.
    It Happened One Night,
    the Criterion Channel
To some, this 1934 road-trip delight starring
Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert is the
    Ur-rom-com, the pre-Code masterpiece from
which much of the rest of the genre flows.
    Let the Sunshine In, Hulu
A radiant Juliette Binoche dates a series of
    noncommittal and disappointing men in
Claire Denis’s ebullient movie, which manages
to be a comedy about romance without ever
    quite feeling like a rom-com.
    My Sassy Girl,
    the Roku Channel
Skip the 2008 American remake and head
straight for the delightfully sadistic 2001
South Korean original about a hapless
engineering student and the chaotic aspiring
    screen
    A tradit
and passes out—but then nothing about this
    rom-com goes as expected.
