PART 3: PAINT (FINALLY)!
Now you can create another new
blank document of a suitable size
for whatever background projects
you have in mind. A good target
document size is 8-bits, 3000 px
per side. This should give you some
flexibility in placement and sizing
without taking up too much drive
space or slowing your machine.
Even if you insert them into a 16-bit
document, they should look fine. As
you paint in this document, it will
sample from the library document
you created above.
From here, it’s all about your
technique and preferences. Build
up your background in stages;
I like to start with larger brushes
and fill the canvas first to get a
feel for what the combination of
brush and sample will look like. You
can always go back to the library
document and sample different
areas as needed.
Work in small, random strokes or
curves, making little partial circles
or even figure eights. Spread out
your strokes for coverage and try
to avoid making obvious patterns.
Once you’ve filled the layer, change
your brush settings to add more
visual interest. Using 100% Flow
preserves details and colors but
prevents mixing with previous
strokes. If there’s “space” in your
brush, this creates nice, complex
textures.
