JPEG, PNG, GIF, etc., the Mac OS doesn’t automatically
change the default away from their Preview app
to open these file types. There is an easy way,
however, to set Photoshop to open the file types
you want by default.
Go to the Finder and click on a JPEG image to
select it, then choose Get Info from the File menu.
Look for the Open With section a little ways down
the dialog. Choose Photoshop from the pop-up menu
and, most importantly, click the Change All button so
that all JPEGs will now open in Photoshop by default
and not just this one. Now when you double-click
on a JPEG it will launch/open in Photoshop.

Q When I upgrade to a new version
of Photoshop, should I keep my old
version and preferences?
A While Adobe has tried to make upgrading to a
new version of Photoshop as seamless as possible,
there are still questions that only you, the user, can
answer. The first of those questions is, “Do you
want to keep your previous version?” Now keep
in mind this only applies to major updates and not
bug fixes. So, for example, going from Photoshop
2020 to Photoshop 2021 would give you the ability
to keep the older 2020 version while installing the
2021 version right next to it.
Most people probably don’t need to keep the
older version; however, if you’re running specific
plug-ins and filters that haven’t been updated to
be compatible with the newer version, then you
may want to keep the older version installed so
that you can use those plug-ins or filters as you
always did until newer versions are available. This
could also be the case for printer drivers and other
hardware that you may be using.
The second question is, “Do you want to keep your
preferences?” If you spent a lot of time customizing
your Photoshop preferences, then you probably want
to keep them the same in the new version. Photoshop
will do it’s best to map the older preferences that
you set to the same items in the new version of
Photoshop. If you were having issues with the older
version, however, this might be a chance to start clean.

Q I got a new Mac and now my JPEGs
open in Preview when I double-click
on them instead of Photoshop. How
can I fix this?
A Although you’ve installed an application capable of
handling a wide variety of image formats, such as

Q I have the option to save as a Cloud
Document. What are the advantages
and disadvantages?
A Photoshop now gives you the choice of saving your
document to your hard drive as you always did or to
save your work as a Cloud Document. Either way will
save your file with all the layers and work intact as it
always did. The difference is that when you save as
a Cloud Document, your file is saved to your Creative
Cloud storage and not your local hard drive.
