NAVIGATE THROUGH YOUR PHOTO
WITH THE NAVIGATOR PANEL
In Lightroom Classic, the Navigator panel also provides
some handy ways to quickly change the view of the
image you’re viewing, or move to different parts of the
photo if you’re already in a zoomed-in view.

Fit, Fill, 100%, and Other Zoom Options: Above the image
view in the Navigator are menu options for changing the
view. Fit will fit the entire image on screen, and Fill will
fill the available viewing area with the image (click on
the up and down arrows to the right of either Fit or Fill
to select the other option). Click on 100% to zoom in to
a 100% view. Clicking 100% again will switch back to the
view of the thumbnail grid. The percentage drop-down
menu (double arrows) at the far right of the Navigator
panel offers a variety of different zoom views. In 9.x
and earlier versions of Lightroom Classic, these were
listed as zoom ratios, such as 1:1, 1:3, 3:1, etc. Adobe
changing these to percentages rather than ratios is a
nice improvement: I think that percentages are easier
for most people to understand.

The beginning of a new year is a good time for viewing the possible paths ahead, as well as looking back
to take in the view of where you’ve come. This month we’ll take a look at some simple but useful ways
to change the view of the images with which you work in Lightroom Classic.

CHANGE THE SIZE OF THE
THUMBNAIL GRID
In the Library module in Lightroom Classic, you can
quickly change the size of the thumbnail grid by holding
the Control key and tapping the + (plus) key to zoom in
to larger thumbnails or the – (minus) key to zoom out to
smaller thumbnails.
There’s also the Thumbnail slider at the lower right
on the Toolbar just below the grid, which does the
same thing. If you don’t see this option in your version
of Lightroom Classic, click the small triangle on the far
right side of the Toolbar and make sure that Thumbnail
Size is checked. This menu controls what options are
visible in the Toolbar.

If the Toolbar seems to be missing, press T or choose
View>Show Toolbar. Since the T key functions as a hide
or show toggle for this feature, it’s easy to accidentally
hide it and not realize it’s gone until you need it!

CHANGE THE IMAGE ZOOM
To switch from the Grid view of the thumbnails to a larger
view of the selected image, tap E (for Loupe view) in
Lightroom Classic, or D (for Detail) in the cloud-based
Lightroom (in Lightroom Classic, D will take you to the
Develop module). Once in that view, you can press
Command- – (PC: Ctrl- –) to zoom out or Command-+
(PC: Ctrl-+) to zoom in on the photo. This works the
same in Lightroom Classic or Lightroom.

Change the Default Zoom to a Specific Percentage: When
you have Fit/Fill or a specific percentage active (the text
will be white) in the Navigator, that becomes your default
zoom view. So, when you’re viewing the thumbnails and
