All of these assets leverage Creative Cloud Libraries to
seamlessly and “auto-magically” connect to your desktop and
mobile applications. At the forefront, of course, is Photoshop.
While Capture runs beautifully on the iPad (where I do most
of my photo ingest and a lot of my creative work), my iPhone
is the mobile camera I use most, so I’ll be using that platform
for this piece.

GOING MOBILE

BRYAN O’NEIL HUGHES

I’ve presented many sessions at Photoshop World and have enjoyed showing all sorts of tips, tricks, and
hidden gems related to imaging workflows, but none have garnered more awe, interest, or “how-did-I-
not-know-about-this?” than the application to which I’m about to introduce you: Adobe Capture. It’s a
free application for iOS and Android that leverages the device’s camera to capture pro-grade assets:
precise, harmonious color values; infinitely scalable vector shapes; custom brushes; one-of-a-kind
patterns; 3D materials; and video looks (or LUTs). It can even identify fonts or suggest similar ones from
Adobe’s vast library of thousands of fonts.

MY FAVORITE ROOMS
IN THE FUNHOUSE
Let’s take a look at a few of my favorite “rooms” in the
funhouse that’s Adobe Capture. Color is something
we all rely on and leverage across applications, so
it makes sense to start there.

COLORS: Capture harmonizes five-color combos in
real time, using the same advanced technology you
might remember as once being called “Kuler” in
Photoshop. It couldn’t be easier: Select Colors from
the capture modes at the bottom of the app, point your
phone’s camera, click to freeze the image, and drag
the color pins around to select different colors—done!
What you create is a beautiful, harmonious palette of
accurate colors. Tip: If you need more light to help
you make your capture, just tap the Flashlight icon to
turn on your phone’s light before freezing the image.
After freezing and selecting your colors, tap on
the checkmark at the bottom of the app and you’ll
see that you even have HEX values and the ability to
refine each with precision. Now just tap Save at the
top right, tap the name of the library that appears
below the Save To section, and select the library to
which you want to save your assets. You can even
tap the + icon at the top right of the Choose Library
page to create a new library. Once you select your
library, tap the Save button.
These colors, like all assets in Capture, will
now appear in the Libraries panel (Window>
Libraries) in Photoshop and other desktop and mobile
apps in the library that you selected or created.
Thanks to your Adobe ID, it just works!
