A BRUSH WITH THE PAST


I was revisiting an effect that I experimented with around 10 years ago, and as I was playing with it
again, I came up with a cool blur effect that not only yields very cool results in minutes but it’s also a lot
of fun to experiment with on different images, especially when you see how easy it is! All you need is a
simple photo of a subject, preferably an action shot.

STEP ONE: First, open the photo you want to use, or you can
download a preview of this image we’re using from Adobe Stock.
I like this image because of the position of the dancer, and the
effect will reflect the excitement and action in the photo. We’ll
need to start by extracting the subject from the background.
If you’d like to download the low-res watermarked ver-
sion of this image to follow along, click this link, log in
with your Adobe ID, and click the Save to Library button.
Double-click the image in the Libraries panel (Window>
Libraries) to open it in Photoshop. To make it easier to work
with the image, increase the resolution of the practice file.
