only for practice purposes.) Go
to Image>Image Size, turn on
the Resample checkbox, select
Preserve Details 2.0 from the
Resample drop-down menu,
set the Width to 2,000 pixels,
and click OK.

STEP TWO: Go under the Select
menu and choose Subject,
which does a pretty good job
of selecting the main subject
in the image. If needed, you
can use the various selection
tools to adjust the selection.
I also like to double-check the
selection by using the Select
and Mask options, so click
the Select and Mask button
in the Options Bar to activate
its workspace.

STEP THREE: In the Properties panel, set the view to On Black (A) and push the
Opacity to 100%. This allows you to see if any of the background appears in the
selection. Overall, this selection looks pretty good but grab the Refine Edge Brush
tool (R) and dab a couple areas around the subject’s hair to clean it up. You can also
try the Refine Hair button in the Options Bar to improve the selection around the hair.
I also used the Quick Selection tool (above the Refine Edge Brush) and added
back a part of the subject’s right shoe that was missing. When done, go back to
the Properties panel, down to the Output Settings section, choose New Layer in
the Output To drop-down menu, and click OK.
