STEP FOUR: Back in the canvas,
the original layer has been
turned off in the Layers panel
so you’ll see the extracted
subject against a transparent
background. To clean up the
edges a little, go under the
Layer menu, to Matting, and
choose Defringe. Set the Width
to just 1 or 2 pixels and click OK.

STEP FIVE: Make a duplicate of
the extracted subject by press-
ing Command-J (PC: Ctrl-J).
Lock the transparency of this
layer by clicking the first icon
to the right of the word “Lock”
near the top of the Layers panel.
Also, click the Eye icon next
to the original extracted layer
below to hide it for now (we’ll
need it later).

STEP SIX: Press D to set the
Foreground color to its default
color of black, and then press
Option-Delete (PC: Alt-Back-
space) to fill the subject with
black (since we locked the
transparency in the previous
step, the transparent areas
shouldn’t be filled with black).
This will essentially produce a
silhouette of the shape of the
main subject. We’ll use this to
define a custom brush.
