S T EP 11: In the Toolbar, click-
and-hold on the Blur tool and
choose the Smudge tool from
the tool flyout menu. Up in
the Options Bar, click on the
brush preset thumbnail and
locate the brush we defined
earlier (it should be at the
bottom of the menu). Once
the brush is selected, set the
Strength to 97%.
Place the cursor over the
subject; your custom brush
should look like the outline
of the dancer. If it doesn’t, go
to Photoshop (PC: Edit)>Pref-
erences>Cursors, change the
Painting Cursors to Full Size
Brush Tip, and click OK. Use
the Bracket keys ([ ]) on your
keyboard to size the brush to
approximately the same size
as the extracted dancer. Then
paint a quick test stroke to see
how the Smudge tool works.
Press Command-Z (PC: Ctrl-
Z) to undo. The effect can
be done freehand by click-
ing-and-dragging, and it’s fun
to play around with; however,
for a finished look, using a
path gives you more control
and options.

STEP 12: Start by making a
duplicate of the subject layer
and then turn off that dupli-
cate layer for the moment.
Reselect the original layer
below by clicking on it in the
Layers panel.
