STEP 15: Now go to the Window
menu and choose Paths to open
the Paths panel. Click on the
current path to make sure it’s
active (you can rename the path
if you want by double-clicking
its name). Next, click on the
Paths panel’s flyout menu icon
at the top right and choose
Stroke Path.

STEP 16: In the Stroke Path
dialog, choose Smudge in the
Tool drop-down menu, leave
Simulate Pressure unchecked,
and click OK. This may take a
few seconds to run depending
on your processor’s speed but
it’s rather cool to watch the
effect take shape.

S T E P 17: Here’s the result of
the smudge effect, all from
a simple path. In the Paths
panel, click in an empty space
to turn off the path. If you don’t
get a result you like, you can
undo the smudge, and then
simply change the angle of
the path, but make sure the
starting point is still centered
on the guides. This is a fun
way to experiment with other
images by trying different paths
at different angles.
