STEP 21: Select the Gradient
tool (G) in the Toolbar and in
the Options Bar, click on the
gradient preview thumbnail
to open the Gradient Editor.
Choose the Foreground to
Transparent preset in the Basics
set, and click OK. Select the
Radial Gradient type icon in
the Options Bar. Make sure the
layer mask itself is highlighted
in the Layers panel, and then
add a few random gradients
to fade the darker areas of
the smudge effect. This gives
a more balanced look.

STEP 22: Create a new blank
layer above the smudge layer
and set its layer blend mode
to Overlay near the top left
of the Layers panel. Here you
can have some fun with colors.
Using the Gradient tool with
the same radial gradient we
used in the previous step, add
four or five gradients using
a different color for each by
choosing colors in the Swatches
panel (Window>Swatches). We
mainly used colors relevant to
specific areas of the image to
really punch up the color and
streak effects.

STEP 23: Click on the main
subject layer at the top of the
layer stack to make it active,
and then add a layer mask to
it. Use the Gradient tool to
fade the subject’s arm on the
left side, as well as some of
her hair.
