STEP 24: With the top layer
still active, press Q to activate
Quick Mask mode, which will
allow you to draw gradients
as selections. Using the same
gradient, draw a gradient over
the right area of the canvas
around the subject’s hand. It
will appear as a red overlay.
Press Q again to exit Quick
Mask mode, and the red overlay
will now be a regular selection.
You’ll see the marching ants
as a circular preview but the
selection is in fact based on
the gradient. If you also see
the selection around the outer
edge of the document, go to
Select>Inverse so the hand
is actually selected instead of
everything around it.

STEP 25: Go under the Filter
menu, to Blur, and choose
Gaussian Blur. Set the Radius
to 5 pixels and click OK. This
helps blend the subject with the
movement of the background
effect. Press Command-D (PC:
Ctrl-D) to deselect. Feel free
to experiment with more blurs
as needed and even play with
other filters to add more stylized
effects to the streaks.

STEP 26: Select the smudge
effect layer in the Layers panel,
and then repeat Steps 24–25
to apply a blur around the
subject’s other hand. Again
this helps blend the subject
more with the smudge effect.
