TRENCH CONNECTION P. 104
When photographer Josh Olins was shooting this WSJ. feature in Peniche, Portugal, he was unexpectedly joined by an equine guest.
“This small horse, typical of the ones in the north of Portugal, was either very territorial or else interested in assisting me, because
he wouldn’t leave my side,” Olins recalls. On the other end of the lens, model Aylah Peterson wore a series of layered ensembles, styled by
Anastasia Barbieri. “I liked the idea of a woman with a strong personality wearing sleek trench silhouettes,” says Barbieri. “She could
be a heroine from movies of [Michelangelo] Antonioni or [Ingmar] Bergman.” The styling helped to tell a larger story, Olins explains.
“The concept was in some ways about what some of us are experiencing as a result of Covid: fleeing cities in search of more natural environ-
ments,” he says. “We wanted to have this contrast between the natural landscapes and the tailored and structured trench coats that
are more typical for a city.” —Natalia Barr
