Perhaps the greatest thing about the Apple
Design Awards is that every winner is unique,
though ‘unique’ may be an understatement
when it comes to Gardens Between ($19.99
on the App Store.) This single-player
adventure puzzle is about time and memory,
with a storybook-esque art style that looks
best when played on the Mac. The game
unravels a narrative of growing up, taking
on adventures, and building friendships,
and features ingenious puzzles that require
the manipulation of time to solve. What’s
particularly interesting is that Gardens Between
features a fully-accessible design, with simple
controls and no text or speech. As well as
winning an Apple Design Award, the game
was nominated for an IGF 2018 award in Visual
Excellence and named one of the most ‘highly
anticipated titles of 2018’ by Polygon. However,
rated 2.4/5 on the Mac App Store, the majority
think the title is too expensive.
