THE SCOOP ON
NON-SCOOPS
When it comes to ice cream,
we’re scooping all year round.
But come summer, we’re swirling
up the routine with these sweet
inventions.

  1. Dark Choco Taco
    Street Beet, Detroit
    Scoops of local Volcano Salt
Vanilla ice cream are encased in a
homemade waffle taco, sealed in a
    dark chocolate shell, then finished
    with a sprinkling of chopped
    peanuts. It’s a simple, nostalgic
formula, but it works oh-so well.

  2. Happy Ice & Soft-Serve
    Happy Ice, Los Angeles
    This shaved-ice joint’s ultra-fine,
    super-soft, eponymous dessert lies
    somewhere at the intersection of
a slushie, sorbet, and granita. But
    its eye-popping, psychedelic,
    rainbow pattern—and swirl
    of Chicago Vegan
    Foods vanilla soft-
    serve—puts it in
    a league of its own.

  3. Hummus Shakes
    The Hummus and Pita Co.,
    New York City
    These way-tastier-than-they-sound
shakes are made with a blend of
    chickpeas, tahini, bananas, dates, almond
milk, and a touch of cinnamon. In classic
    flavors like chocolate, strawberry, butter
pecan, and pistachio—plus a dollop of
    vegan whipped cream—this summer treat
    is a true hum-must!

  4. Monkey Business
    The Modern Vegan, Las Vegas
Banana bread is deep fried and topped
with vanilla ice cream, a crosshatch of
    chocolate sauce, sliced fresh bananas,
and a dusting of powdered sugar. Sure,
the ice cream plays second fiddle to the
glory that is fried banana bread, but
the hot-and-cold symphony of the two
    playing together is pure harmony.

  5. Samoa Samoa
    Frozen Gold, Colorado Springs
A towering swirl of toasted coconut
soft-serve gets coated in candied Rice
    Krispies, showered in toasted coconut
shavings, and drizzled in brown sugar
fudge and caramel sauces in this Girl
    Scout Cookie-inspired frozen fantasy we
    can’t get enough of.

VEGANS CAN
GRILL, TOO
This summer, our smoky, chargrilled,
meaty meals are powered by plants. To
build your perfect cookout,
just follow this guide to
our favorite vegan
grillables.

For the burgers: Handform
your own patties using Beyond
Meat’s Beyond Beef, fire up the grill,
slather on steak sauce, and top with
a pineapple ring and pile of barbecued
jackfruit.
Better BBQ tip: Level up your burger
game like never before by stuffing
your DIY-patties with vegan cheese
(or jalapeño poppers ... why not?).

For the hot dogs: Field Roast’s
seitan-based Frankfurters
are our go-to dogs thanks
to their snappy bite,
classic hot dog taste, and
über juiciness.
Better BBQ tip:
Wrap your dogs in
Sweet Earth Foods
Benevolent Bacon for a
fun, street food-style frank.

For something special: Put a
delicious, unexpected spin on
your barbecue with Violife’s
first-of-its-kind, vegan take
on halloumi—a popular,
grillable, Mediterranean
cheese. Throw it directly on
the grill, wait until golden
brown and crisp, and enjoy.
Better BBQ tip: Serve
your crispy-gooey cheese
with grilled peaches, fresh
watermelon, and peppery
arugula for a sweet-and-salty
summer salad.
