TRANSFER CASES
The transfer case is an auxiliary gearbox connected to the back of the
transmission that allows the driver to select high and low drive range. Transfer
cases are unique to 4WD vehicles only. Power is directed from the transmission
through the transfer case to both ends of the vehicle through two separate
driveshafts. The transfer case is attached to the rear of the transmission and gets
its input directly from the transmission. Power is directed from the engine
through the transmission and then through the transfer case to either the rear
wheels or both the front and rear wheels, depending on what drive mode the
driver selects.
