Dear Tom,

Q I own a 2003 Mustang. I think it has a problem with the rack-and-pinion

bushings. How do I verify this?

Martha,

A Worn rack bushings usually cause the vehicle to wander left and right

while driving down the road. You would find yourself constantly trying to
correct the vehicle’s path with the steering wheel. What’s happening? The
rack is floating left and right within its mounting brackets, causing the
vehicle to drift. If you suspect bad rack mount bushings then get it into a
shop immediately, because this could be dangerous. The vehicle would be
hard to control if the rack comes loose from its mounting brackets. Good
luck.
