tries to pass the front), and excessive tire wear.
TIRE TIP NO. 3
Regular air pressure checks and adjustments will maximize tire life.
Air pressure: Improper air pressure causes tires to wear. When a tire is
underinflated, the center of the tread “bows” inward, causing excessive wear on
both sides of the outside of the tread area. When a tire is over-inflated, the center
of the tread “bows” outward, causing wear on the center of the tire’s tread. Air
pressure varies with temperature and poor tire condition. In addition, excessive
weight requires more air in the tires. This is the reason why tire makers offer an
inflation range with a maximum air pressure. If you must carry additional
weight, check the tire manufacturer’s recommended air pressure adjustments.
TIRE TIP NO. 4
Keep the steering and suspension systems in good working order to
maximize tire life.
Suspension and steering components: Worn suspension and steering parts
cause tires to wear. When you have the vehicle aligned, have them checked for
integrity and replace worn parts immediately. An alignment is only as good as
the parts you’re aligning. A technician can spend all day setting a front end to
perfect specifications, but if the parts are worn, the alignment is worthless.
TIRE TIP NO. 5
Keep fresh shocks and struts on your car to maximize tire life.
Shocks and struts: The purpose of the shock absorbers and struts are to
dampen spring oscillation. Without them the wheels would bounce merrily down
the road, wearing out your poor tires prematurely (not to mention the wear and
tear of suspension components).
The right tires for your vehicle produce a safe, effective, and comfortable ride.
