Tom,

Q Is it true that the Toyota Prius requires car maintenance every 30,000

miles at the cost of $3,000? What do you think of the Prius? I drive 35 miles
one way to work and would like a good mpg car.

David,

A Initially this sounded out of line to me so I checked the Toyota

maintenance schedule to confirm my suspicions, and yes, this is indeed an
urban legend. Toyota’s maintenance schedule for this car indicates no such
cost associated with the 30,000-mile maintenance. It is just a regular
scheduled maintenance, including an oil and filter change, air filter change,
tire rotation, and brake inspection. It will probably cost about $150 for this
service, a far cry from three-grand. I like the Prius, as do the majority of the
country’s motor press core, so buy away.
