Tom,

Q I own a ‘94 Chrysler minivan. The paint has begun peeling off the hood

and roof; it looks like the wind is peeling the paint off. What could cause
this?

Julian—San Francisco

Julian,

A This condition is called paint de-lamination. It is caused by the lack of

chemical bonding of the paint to the primer coat and possibly the primer coat
to the metal of the car’s body if metal is exposed. Chrysler had this problem
in the early to mid-1990s, so your minivan falls right into this category of
vehicles affected by this defect. The only solution is to repaint the area
affected.
